Spiced Apple Crisp with Oat Topping
A classic and comforting dessert that’s sure to please everyone!
When the weather turns colder, a warm and comforting dessert is the perfect way to end a meal. This Spiced Apple Crisp with Oat Topping is a delightful treat that combines tender apples with a crunchy, spiced oat topping. It’s easy to prepare and will fill your kitchen with a delicious aroma. Enjoy it on its own or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra indulgent experience.
Ingredients:
For the Apple Filling:
6 medium apples (I prefer Granny Smith, or a mix), peeled, cored, and sliced
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
Pinch of salt
For the Oat Topping:
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
1/3 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces
Instructions:
Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Prepare the Apple Filling: In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples with granulated sugar, lemon juice, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and a pinch of salt. Toss until the apples are evenly coated. Transfer the mixture to a greased 9-inch baking dish or a similar-sized oven-safe dish.
Prepare the Oat Topping: In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Add the cold butter pieces. Use a pastry cutter, fork, or your fingers to work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Assemble the Crisp: Evenly sprinkle the oat topping over the apple mixture in the baking dish.
Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling. You may want to place a baking sheet on the rack below to catch any drips.
Cool and Serve: Let the apple crisp cool slightly before serving. This allows the juices to thicken a bit more. Serve warm, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
Tips:
Apple Variety: For the best flavor and texture, use a mix of apples. A combination of sweet and tart apples works particularly well.
Make Ahead: You can prepare the apple filling and topping ahead of time and store them separately in the refrigerator. Assemble and bake when you’re ready to serve.
Nutty Variation: For added texture and flavor, you can stir in 1/2 cup of chopped nuts, such as walnuts or pecans, into the oat topping.
Activated Phenolics Powder: Sprinkle two tablespoons of Activated Phenolics Powder to turn this dessert into an antioxidant powerhouse!
Enjoy this easy-to-make hearty treat!
